My long time collaborator Billy Sorrentino had the honor of designing the art for Ringo Starr’s country album Look Up. He reached out to see if I could draw some lettering that would accompany photographs by the great Dan Winters. We worked this project like art directors and letterers did in the mid-20th century: Billy gave me his album layout with a rough sketch of the lettering, told me that he wanted it to feel “outlaw country” and then trusted me to make lettering that fit both the space and the tone. I drew a base of wood type style lettering that had kind of an old west vibe. Then I layered in a bunch of 1960-70s swashes because it’s Ringo Starr. Ringo approved it with no changes. It eventually made its way onto merch and acted as the title art for the video of the album’s title track. Peace and love.
