The Dailies

Max and Henry Quilici reached out to me for help on rebranding their film/tv industry newsletter The Dailies. They wanted to capture a combination of the effervescence of old Hollywood and traditional news aesthetics in way that reflected the friendly tone of voice in their newsletter.

Max and Henry gave me a blank page to start with. We talked about brand personality and the idea of vintage Hollywood came up a lot. That led me to think about the way movie props in old movies somehow looked both real and generic at the same time. Those things have a really unique feel to them and I thought that would be an interesting starting point. I made a list of items and locations that would need brand lettering within a film:

  • Newsreel
  • Film Poster
  • Newspaper
  • Theater Marquee
  • Newsstand
  • Industry Newsletter
  • Tabloid
  • Inter-Office Memo

Then I drew them in a 1930s-1950s Hollywood prop lettering styles. Max and Henry were into it and we narrowed down from there. I had a blast drawing these.
