These are some of the typefaces that I am developing. The ideas for these are where I want them to be, but they don’t have full character sets, some need more weights, italics are hard and/or I’m not sure if anyone will be interested in them. Estimating when these will be “done” is difficult for a variety of reasons so, instead of waiting for that elusive date in the future, I’m making these available for license in their current (and potentially future) states. More details below.
Wait. What is this all about?
Okay, I’m going to be really honest. It takes me forever to finish typefaces to sell here. My primary work is developing typefaces and lettering for clients. I love that work and I prioritize those projects over finishing my own typefaces. Plus, I’m a very “solve a problem” kind of designer and there are no real problems to be solved when making typefaces for general use. That lack of a specific goal leads me to a lot of anxiety, self-doubt and existential questions like “Why does this typeface need to exist?” and “How confident am I that this typeface will sell enough licenses to recoup the cost of development?” and “Tal, you are aware that you have no idea what you are doing, right?” Those questions make me stare out the window and sigh instead of drawing the § and other infrequently used, but labor intensive, glyphs that make a typeface “finished.” Also, I’m obsessed with the process of making typefaces and I’m frequently distracted by ideas about how to improve the process for me and my colleagues. So, yeah, these typefaces get delayed. I decided to stop beating myself up about my plodding progress and just embrace it by getting the idea of “when it is finished” out of my head.
When will the final versions be ready?
I don’t know when, or even if, those next steps will happen. It all depends on my availability and “market conditions.”
Will I have to pay for updates if I’ve already licensed the fonts?
No. You’ll get any updates at no added cost.
What if I need something in the typeface that isn’t there now?
Give me a shout and we’ll talk it through. It’ll depend on my schedule, if what you need is something that I was already planning to add, etc.
